Changing Photo Sizes at Once Using Automator

Ever had a time where you wanted to resize multiple images to a certain size at once to post on a website? If you want to edit one image, using Preview might be faster. (Check my Preview blog post.) However, when resizing, say, 100 images, resizing each image one by one is time taking and takes effort. But using Automator, no matter how many photos there are, all could be resized in less than a minute.

First, open Workflow in Automator.

Then, open Photos → Scale Images

Drag a list of images to scale.

Select the folder to move the edited images to and choose the size to resize the images to.

Click Run on the top right corner.

As could be seen, all the images are cropped to 480 pixels.

Ease your resizing jobs with Automator!

How to Pitch a Project

Recently, I personally had to pitch a project to a couple of teachers. Since the entire CTI course is very much project-based, many of us will have also had similar situations. Many of us may have been inexperienced in giving pitches about their projects or ideas and did not know the best way to approach the challenge. Perhaps that fear/nervousness/cluelessness will be gone after your read this post.

Let's begin with the purpose of the pitch. A pitch is when you go talk to a prospective client and persuade them to work with you. Usually, there will be other teams pitching the same project as well. You should not think of it as a competition and that you are pitching against them. You're pitching your own ability to do the project well. This small difference in attitude will result in a big change in the way the client sees you. If you talk about how you will do the job better than the others can, you still might not convince the client that you can do it. Being able to do it better than others is different from being able to do it up to the clients' standards.
Pitches are difficult to nail, and most people will be terrible at it in the beginning. They can be extremely subjective and there are numerous variables which you have no control over, that determine whether you get the project or not. For example, your client may have been in a very bad mood the day of your pitch, and thus is less inclined to give you the job. You cannot have control over these things, and all you can do is deal with their outcomes.

Tip number one: It's not about you.

No one cares who you are as an individual and what type of background you have. No one is going to give you a project just because you mentioned your past achievements. Clients want to known if you can understand and fix their problems. Think of this as going to the doctor during a medical emergency, and the doctor spends precious time talking about all the past surgeries he has performed rather than helping you in that painful situation.
In the pitch, tell them who you are, but spend no more than two minutes talking about yourself. Make the rest of the conversation about your client, the project, the problems at hand, etc. When showing examples of past work, make it relatable to the current project. For example, draw parallels between projects by saying "In this project, the client had an issue that is very similar to the one at hand. Here's how I fixed it for them, and how it can work for you too...".

Tip number two: Confidence is key.

As much as pitching may make you uncomfortable, the image you project will inevitably have an impact on whether or not you land the project. Aim to be the pitch that makes your client think they don't have to go through any more boring pitches because they've found a partner. Your confidence is for their benefit; you will be working together, after-all.
However, a certain type of confidence is potentially harmful. When you are too confident in your abilities and keep saying things like "this will be easily fixed", you are making the client think that your job there isn't so necessary. You are minimizing their problems, which makes them reflect whether they really need to get it fixed or not. This could tarnish your chances of landing the project. No matter how easy you might think it is to fix someone's problem, remember that their pain is real. Acknowledge it, then fix it.

Tip number three: Ask good questions.

The key to every good pitch meeting is to get the client talking, because not only do you absolutely need to hear what they have to tell you in order to move forward with the project, the client will feel great telling you. It's like talking to someone about a problem you have and relieving yourself of that burden. So make sure you walk in with a bunch of good questions to ask.
"What kind of site do you want?" is not a good question
"What impact do you see the new site having on quarterly earnings?" is a better question.

Tip number four: Make it a kickoff.

The best way to show your client what it's like to work with you is to start working. Forget that it's a pitch, and treat it like a kickoff. Let the conversation flow and gently guide it into interviews. Your client wants the pitch process to be over as much as you do. They want to get started, so show them what that looks like, show them that you're able to take the project by the horns.
However, overdoing this technique will appear to your client that you are in over your head and desperately trying to move forward, while disregarding what they may be saying or evaluating at this stage.

So there they are, four tips on how to improve your project pitches. Whenever there is a project and you want to brief your client about how you will tackle it, remember these four key things to help you nail the pitch, project a good impression of yourself as a working partner, and actually land the project.

New Surface Laptop. Is it worth it?

Surface Laptop Comparasion

So Microsoft released a new device, the Surface Laptop. Is it good? Should you get it? Short answer: No

Long answer:

To me a Surface is a device that crosses the gap between Laptop or Desktop and tablet. Surface Pen and Surface go hand in hand. If I can't use the Pen it's not a Surface. I know you *can* use the pen on the Surface Laptop, but not *really*. The new laptop hinge's don't make it flip all the way around, so you can't use it for taking class notes on it's screen.

If you look over the fact it doesn't bridge the gap between laptop and tablet, and you're just looking for a $999 laptop with great specs and hardware, this also isn't the laptop for you.
Image result for surface laptop
For $999 on the surface laptop you get
4 GB ram
128 GB SSD
Screen: 13.5”
Display Resolution: 2256 x 1504
i5 resolution
Fabric keyboard

Compared to Razerblade stealth

Now let's compare this to another laptop released this year
Image result for razer blade stealth
The Razerblade stealth laptop crushes the new surface in every division. For $999 you can get better specs in almost every category

8 GB ram
12.5"
i7 processor
Display Resolution: 2560 x 1440
256 GB SSD
1x  USBC port
HDMI output
Backlit keyboard

Conclusion: The new surface laptop isn't a revolutionary new device from Microsoft. Compare Microsoft's other products released this year, the stunning surface studio and detachable surface book. The new laptop offers nothing more when compared with other laptops in the same genre. Had Microsoft put the hinge all the way around, this might be a different story. But the bottom line still stands, you can get more use for your money if you literally buy any other $999 Ultrabook laptop.

Hopefully by the time the surface pro 5 rolls out, we'll see a better laptop by Microsoft by then. In the mean time, I'll be dreaming about the surface book and studio and forgetting this laptop.

Digital Divide

Hong Kong is a developed city, and since we are living in a developed city, we are privileged that we are able to access internet and technology without limit and use it for our own advantages. However, there are many people in different countries that are unable to access internet and technology. This divide is one of the issues addressed at the Global Issues Network Conference that was held at AIS in March. It is part of our digital rights that we should have access to the internet, yet so many are still unable to access it.

Digital Divide, by definition, is the gulf between those who have ready access to computers and the internet and those who do not.

Why is this issue relevant?
Digital Literacy is imperative to the world we live in today where everyone communicates news and information online. However, digital literacy cannot be attained without access to the internet and computers. Imagine those people who have no access to computers and internet, those people won't know how to work with computers and because of that new information are hard to get through.

What is being done to bridge the gap?
First of all, democracy. Freedom is critical to getting access to the internet because what is the use if the government won't allow you do access it. Some people are fighting for their rights to access the internet and individuals around the world are also helping others so that they could have access to the web.

Secondly, technology should be integrated into education, and work so that people would find the relevance of computers. Incorporating technology into education and work has increased these past few years. So it won't be long until everyone realizes that technology is important. As a result, the government or the people would feel the need to get computers and allow their people to access it.

Social Media Plays a Big Part of Our Daily Life

Every day we see people, friends, family members go to their phone and visit their social media sites. Social media has played a big part of our society today because, through social media, we are able to connect with people who are not near us.

Through social media, we are able to share our achievements, our pain, and our frustration. It is a place where we feel most comfortable sharing our life stories because it doesn’t need a direct contact to people. For this very reason, many people overshare their personal stories and frustration online, and sometimes it turns into something inappropriate. Let us all be aware that everything we post online is permanent and can be seen by others.

Universities and employers might look at your social media sites for information about you as a person, outside the boundaries of a resume or academic testing. When they see inappropriate things on your profile, they may not be willing to accept you. Not only will they see your profile but comments made on other post is public to anyone. That is why social media can build or destroy you and your career in the future.

It is true that the purpose of social media is so we can present ourselves freely to our friends and family but at the same time let us think about our posts first before we post it online. To sum it up, be sure that whatever we post online are relevant.

What can improve you in your school community?

1.  Being yourself

Being yourself is very important in life, if you are only being what others want you to be, you won't be happy, because you aren't yourself. So be yourself, there will be people who accept you for who you are.

2. Speak Up

If something is bothering you, or something you want to change, feel free to make a difference, if you are afraid that you will fail, just remember that failure will bring success. If there is something you want to change about school, that would improve the school, speak up, make a proposal, be a part of the student council!

3. Create Great Relationships

Having good relationships with your peers, parents, and mentors is very important, so try not to start any fights, dramas, or arguments at school or anywhere else.
Be nice to everyone, don't talk behind people's back, and think about the consequences of a bad action before you do it. Remember that diversity is good, so don't always be picky about who you want to be friends with, it is always good to have a diverse friend group.

4. Do it!

If something is bothering you, or you notice something that you can change about the school, to improve the school community, then do it, raise up your voice, and suggest it to someone, you can suggest it to the teachers, the Principal, or the Student Council.

How to Manage Stress for your Own Benefits

Managing Stress

Constant stress is the cause of neurasthenia, ulcer diseases, hypertension and other physical and mental illness. Stress is a leading factor connected to suicides around the world. Stress could also affect relationships between families, friends, and people around the workplace, causing divorces, unemployments, and even crimes.

And we know, as soon as we start to blend in the society, we take responsibilities, and with responsibilities, comes stress. Almost everyone feels or felt stress in some way, and feel bad about it. But, moderate stress can actually be beneficial if managed correctly.

Therefore, I am going to talk about the benefits of having moderate stress.

In order to provoke improvement, accomplishment, and learning, moderate stress is required, procrastinators know this very well. When the deadline of an essay is closing in by hours, they start to finally feel stress, and when human feel stress, their brain start to produce chemical that allows your brain to think and react faster, that is way people under stress tend to finish work faster with great efficiency.

Medical experts suggests, moderate stress can actually be beneficial to health, due to the fact that when people are stressed, their heart start to pump and discharge more blood around the organs, allowing faster blood flow, which strengthens the contraction of the blood vessels, improving vasomotor function, which is beneficial to cardiovascular health, ultimately reducing the chance of getting cardiovascular diseases.

So now we know moderate stress is beneficial. But how do we manage them?

1. Set yourself a goal.

A clever way to manage stress will be to set yourself a goal to accomplish in a certain period of time. Such as finishing the first two paragraph of the essay by midnight, or run 10km every week, etc.

By doing so, it keeps your mind in a mild stress mode, benefitting mind and you body.

2. Know your limit.

Whether you give yourself stress or others, always know your limit of how much stress you can handle. Because if stress is overloaded, it could be harmful for your body and mind.

So, once in a while, take a day off and relax your mind and body, take a break, for better performance in the following days.

3. Know that moderate stress is beneficial.

By constantly reminding yourself moderate stress is beneficial, you will then have the energy to go on, you will then have the motivation to keep going.

End Procrastination NOW

Five Techniques to End Procrastinations

As a high-schooler, I understand both the pleasure we get when we leave the work off for tomorrow, and the pain we get when the dead line of an essay is a few hours a head.

In fact, it is sometimes beneficial to procrastinate. As study shows, by having that sense of pleasure leaving the work for tomorrow, and even the moderate stress you get when the dead line is closing in, it is actually beneficial to both physical and mental health. But of course, the work produced by procrastination always end up in bad manner. Therefore I am here to give the best advice to minimize procrastination.

“A year from now you may wish you had started today.”
Karen Lamb

1. Stop the talking, and do the walking.

It is indeed beneficial to plan ahead of time before doing something, but if the planning period goes too long, it would be time wasting and un-productive. Wise man says, by learning from failure is the way to learn and success, if you spend too much time on planning for the perfect, the result might actually be unpleasant.

Instead, you should spend less time planning in the beginning, a to do list would be fine, and start to actually do it, just do it, and learn from the mistakes and keep going.

2. Leap of Faith.

Sometimes you just have to go for it. People who procrastinate always don't know where to start it off, they always have to leave it for later because they believe they are not "ready" yet.

But, you just have to do a leap of faith, start the first sentence of the essay, see how it goes in your mind, fix up the error and go with the plan you made before. Just start the first slide of your presentation, sometimes by just writing the introduction of the presentation and essay, you could go on and on and finish off what you have started easier than you would have expected.

3. Start the Day Off With Your Worst Fear.

By getting done with the last thing you want to finish today in the beginning, the rest of you day would just go easier. Always leave the best at the last, finish what you least want finish first, than the rest of your work would just be easier and easier.

4. Just Finish it.

Once you have started something, and you are on the flow, it would be bad if you stop it in the middle just because you are feeling a little lazy. Just because you are feeling a little hungry during the middle of the essay, and you go and grab some food, you might loose the flow and forget where you left off with.

Therefore, by just finishing the what you started with, you could finish it in a constant flow, which is always beneficial for writing an essay or writing a presentation.

5. No excuses.

As soon as you give yourself an excuse for not doing the work today, you have to know that you will find another excuse tomorrow. Things always go differently in the future, you can never predict if there is a game update tomorrow, that you would want to play, you can never predict if your friends would ask you to hangout tomorrow because it's one's birthday, etc.

Always do it now, in case of "emergencies" tomorrow.

As soon as you know how to minimize procrastinations, you work's quality would improve, and the work efficiency would have a dramatic increase as well.

How to Digitalize Google Forms to a Standard-Based Level

Google Form quizzes are an interesting and unique way to engage the quiz-taker. It also benefits the assessor as add-ons such as Flubaroo make it really simple to analyze and categorize the scores of the quiz. There is also a new Google feature called "quizzes" which is similar to Flubaroo but does not have all of the amazing features.

In this blog, I will go through several concepts that you, as a teacher, may need to know and will be displaying the full extent of my knowledge through videos.

  • For Students that may be at a higher math level - How to create a Google Form Quiz

  • For Teachers - How to Create a Google Form with Images and Make it into a Quiz

  • For Teachers - How to use Flubaroo with the already made Google form quiz and Manually Input Standard Space Grading

How to create a Google Form Quiz (Student)

The video above will show you how to make a simple Google Forms quiz if you are a student. This is effective on students, especially on students who may be skilled mathematically as it allows them to make quizzes and questions by themselves and test each other, making it fun and a great learning process.

The first thing to do is to locate yourself to Google Drive. This can be done, either by going through Gmail and connecting to Google Drive or simply going to 'drive.google.com'. Once you have done so, go ahead and find a place you are comfortable creating this form, it could be right out in the open or in some folders.

Locate this "NEW" button on the top left of the Google form, and click it.

If you cannot already find the Google Forms app, click under more and it should be the first one that appears. Click on "Google Forms".
Once you have done that, you will see a screen similar to this where there is an Untitled Form with an Untitled Question, go ahead and name your Quiz and create the question.

After you have created your questions, which should be default a multiple choice question, fill in the possible answers and click add another to keep making these questions.

In order to send it to a friend who you might want to practice the quiz with, click the "send" button on the top right, then put in your friend's e-mail address. Go ahead and click "send" and begin your learning!

How to Create a Google Form with Images and Make it into a Quiz

The video above will show you how to make a Google Forms Quiz with images. This way, in my opinion, is the most effective and successful way to do it according to my trials.

Now, go to the PDF with all of the questions, and take a screen shot of just the question. In order to do this on mac hold command + shift + 4, on a desktop alt + prnt scrn, or on a windows laptop fn + prnt scrn. Now take this pointed to the top left handside of the question, hold and drag it until the rectangle fits the question. Once you let go, the computer will take the screenshot, which will automatically go onto your desktop.

After that, go back to the form, on the side there should be an 'add image' option, symbolized by the two mountains, click on it and add your screenshot. The optimal way, I have figured out, is to just write "question 1" as it saves a lot of time but make sure the quesiton, as well as the possible answers are on the screenshot. Then, also wright A, B, C, or D as possible answers.

Finally, I would highly recommend adding a section instead of a question, it is more organized and instead of naming the title section, just name it question 2. This way it doesn't let the question intefere with the image.

How to use Flubaroo with the already made Google form quiz and Manually Input Standard Space Grading

The video above will show you how to make a Flubaroo Quiz, this only works if you are an elementary teacher. Firstly, locate yourself to the "G3 Math's Digitized" Folder. It should have been shared with you on our second meeting, and you should have it on your own Google Drive. Then, go ahead and choose the relevant quiz to you. Those quizzes should be the ones you see in the folder, not in any of the other folders inside.

Now, go ahead and make a copy of that quiz, you can do this by right clicking on the quiz and clicking the "copy" option. Now that you have done that, there should be a new form on the folder called "Copy of ## Test", make sure you rename it by right clicking it and clicking the "rename" option. Rename it to your class, for example, "3Z - Chapter 99 Test", and drag the form into the "Active Quizzes" folder.

Now that the Quiz is in the active folder, go ahead and open it. There should be an eye icon in the top right corner, this is the preview button and you can take the test as a student in here. Go ahead and answer all the questions correctly, this will be used as an answer key when you make a Flubaroo sheet, later on.

Return back to the "3Z - Chapter 99 Test" form that you can edit. Click on the "Responses" tab, there should only be 1 response, which is you. Now, click on the green square with a white cross, this will create a spreadsheet for the form. Inside that spreadsheet should be only 1 line, it is your response. You can now send out your form to your students by going back to the Google Forms document and clicking the "Send" button. Type in your personalized class code, make sure that you are on the default settings and send it to your class.

Now that the class has answered the form, go back to the Responses spreadsheet. Click on add-ons, on the top of the toolbar, hover over Flubaroo, and enable Flubaroo on the spreadsheet. Once that is done, hover of the Flubaroo add-on again and click "Autograde". This should open up the Flubaroo sheet and grade the test. Now, above every question, please insert the Standard that question is, this will be extremely helpful, but you have to do it manually right now until we are done making the script. Now that you have put the standards above the questions, please leave me a message, I will manually put in the standard-spacing. The last step will all be done automatically shortly.

What teachers should know about us students.

What makes a teacher successful?
What good is it if a teacher has all the facts, but cannot communicate them in a way that others can comprehend? Having the expertise for any subjects is important but the ability to transfer that knowledge to another person (students) is what makes an excellent instructor stand out.

At some point in life, everyone was or will be a student.
As a G11 student, life in school is particularly stressful at this point. With life hitting you with everything it has, it is not helpful if teachers give out a load of assignments expecting that particular student to dedicate all their time to that single assignment.

Moreover, we students were not born with the same goals in life. Each one of us was born in a different environment with a different goal in life and a different dream in mind that we want to do as we continue to grow. It is not helpful if every classroom is designed with one learning style in mind. Though over the years I have spent in high school, attempts to change the learning environment in school are pretty obvious. With traditional courses replaced with more realistic, helpful courses that can be applied in the future such as the robotics class in middle school, and the environment of the class changed to make it more comfortable like the design of current english class in AIS.

This is exactly what the school and teachers should do. Rather than forcing information into the minds of students and expect them to understand everything you know, you should make the student interested in learning that particular subject by making their learning environment comfortable and make them feel interested in it.

There are also some good ways to teach a student.

Consider Kinesthetic Learning
Of the different learning styles, the kinesthetic learning is the hardest bunch to teach in a traditional setting. This learning is about movement–touching, feeling, and moving through knowledge, which requires space and opportunity that many traditional classrooms do not allow for.

Kinesthetic learning benefits from students trying something, watching it fail, and taking that knowledge forward. While this can be difficult logistically with a large class, implementing kinesthetic strategies will not just help a few kids, but your own approach to how students learn.

There Are Seven Learning Styles
How exactly “learning styles” should be used depends on who you speak to. It is true that learning styles are among the most misunderstood facets of modern education. It isn’t true that there are “kinesthetic learners,” but is is true that there is “kinesthetic learning.” Key difference.

Visual: Using sight (Most effective in my opinion)
Auditory: Using songs or rhythms
Verbal: Speaking out loud the information
Kinesthetic: Using touch and taste to explore the information
Logical: A more mathematical approach to concepts
Interpersonal: Learning in groups
Intrapersonal: Learning alone

Classroom Support

Teachers, wanted to have eyes over the entire classroom without having to tire yourself out?
Well, here's a free online tool for you!

Introducing... CLASS DOJO!

Class Dojo is a free online program that allows teachers to easily control the work environment in a classroom during work periods.

How does it work? It's simple.

Below is a picture of an example class under the monitoring of their teacher.

Each student gets their own avatar.

The green, notification-like icon means that the student has been rewarded for being on task, hard working, helping others, etc.
If a student is not doing what he or she should be doing, the teacher can give them a red mark, for either being off task, wasting time, bad attitude, etc.
This makes grading attitudes in class much easier as the red and green marks easily remind the teacher about the students' behavior.

The Class Dojo app is available for download on the app store, all you need is an account.

Here is the official video that introduces Class Dojo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYeKBOMr5Mo

Class Dojo can be opened on a tablet device, such as an iPad, being easily carried, allowing the teacher to walk around the classroom freely, and spectate the work process of students more accurately.

Besides monitoring the class, Class Dojo also allows students to create their own learning portfolios to document their learning progress.

For more information please visit:
https://www.classdojo.com/resources/

There are information sections for students, parents, and teachers.

The importance of Antivirus Softwares

Antivirus (or anti-virus) software is used to safeguard/protect a computer from malware Including Viruses, Computer Worms, and Trojan Horses.

In this blog post, I'll show you what viruses exist in computers and different kinds of software that is capable of eliminating these threats.

Viruses:

A virus is a form of malware that is capable of copying itself and spreading to other computers. Viruses often spread to other computers by attaching themselves to various programs and executing code when a user launches one of those infected programs. Viruses can also spread through script files, documents, and cross-site scripting vulnerabilities in web apps. Viruses can be used to steal information, harm host computers and networks, create botnets, steal money, render advertisements, and more.

Trojan horse
As the name suggested added on with the literal definition of the trojan horse used back then, “Trojan,” is a type of malware that disguises itself as a normal file or program to trick users into downloading and installing malware. A Trojan can give a malicious party remote access to an infected computer. Once an attacker has access to an infected computer, it is possible for the attacker to steal data (logins, financial data, even electronic money), install more malware, modify files, monitor user activity (screen watching, keylogging, etc), use the computer in botnets, and anonymize internet activity by the attacker.

Computer worms

Computer worms are among the most common types of malware. They spread over computer networks by exploiting operating system vulnerabilities. Worms typically cause harm to their host networks by consuming bandwidth and overloading web servers. Computer worms can also contain “payloads” that damage host computers. Payloads are pieces of code written to perform actions on affected computers beyond simply spreading the worm. Payloads are commonly designed to steal data, delete files, or create botnets. Computer worms can be classified as a type of computer virus, but there are several characteristics that distinguish computer worms from regular viruses. A major difference is that computer worms have the ability to self-replicate and spread independently while viruses rely on human activity to spread (running a program, opening a file, etc). Worms often spread by sending mass emails with infected attachments to users’ contacts.

Antivirus software may also remove or prevent spyware and adware, along with other forms of malicious programs.

Spyware
Spyware is a type of malware that functions by spying on user activity without their knowledge. These spying capabilities can include activity monitoring, collecting keystrokes, data harvesting (account information, logins, financial data), and more. Spyware often has additional capabilities as well, ranging from modifying security settings of software or browsers to interfering with network connections. Spyware spreads by exploiting software vulnerabilities, bundling itself with legitimate software, or in Trojans.

Adware
Adware (short for advertising-supported software) is a type of malware that automatically delivers advertisements. Common examples of adware include pop-up ads on websites and advertisements that are displayed by software. Often times software and applications offer “free” versions that come bundled with adware. Most adware is sponsored or authored by advertisers and serves as a revenue generating tool. While some adware is solely designed to deliver advertisements, it is not uncommon for adware to come bundled with spyware (see below) that is capable of tracking user activity and stealing information. Due to the added capabilities of spyware, adware/spyware bundles are significantly more dangerous than adware on its own.

There are free and paid antivirus software.

Free antivirus software generally only searches your computer using signature-based detection which involves looking for patterns of data that are known to be related to already-identified malware.

Good Examples:
